Rachel Berry Obituary

Rachel B. Berry was born on December 7, 1926 to her parents Charles Stokes and Bertie Fisher Stokes. She was one of 6 children made within their union: Phillip, Agnes, Norma, Charles, Jr., Betty and Rachel. Throughout her years, Rachel gained her education through the Pittsburgh Public Schools. She graduated from 5th Avenue High School in 1945. She continued her education at Duff’s Business School, which was located in Downtown Pittsburgh. Rachel did work as a Senior Division Secretary at Urban League.

Later in Life, Rachel married her Beryl Berry, Sr. in 1947. Throughout this union they had 3 sons, Beryl, Jr., William and Matthew. Not only was she a mother to her boys, but also a mother to all of the children of the Homewood-Brushton community. She always fed the kids in the neighborhood, making sure no one was ever hungry.

Rachel accepted Christ into her life at the Wesley Center AME Church in Hill District. She then continued to serve Christ at Carrone Baptist and Baptist Temple, which has been her home church for several years. During these years, she tirelessly did missionary work within the church. She also enjoyed horticulture and took care of her plants.

She is preceded in death by her Husband: Beryl Berry, Sr.; Son: Matthew Berry; Parents: Charles Stokes and Bertie Fisher; Siblings: Phillip, Agnes, Norma, and Charles Stokes, Jr.

Rachel B. Berry transitioned to eternal peace on Friday, June 18, 2021. She was 94 years old. She is survived by her sons: William and Beryl Berry, Jr. (Lorraine); Sister: Betty Fraizer; Granddaughters: Nyia Berry-Miller and Donna Berry; Great-Grandchildren: David, Sean, and Rachel Miller; Nephews and Nieces too numerous to mention; Family and friends too numerous to mention.

 

Services will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Baptist Temple Church in Homewood. Viewing will begin at 10am with services following at 11am. Interment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
